Nasi Tumpeng: A Symbol of the Greatness and Richness of Indonesian Culture

Nasi Tumpeng is a typical Indonesian dish that contains deep meaning in local culture and traditions. Shaped like a mountain, Nasi Tumpeng symbolizes prosperity, success and harmony, with the yellow color of turmeric symbolizing wealth. Apart from being delicious, the manufacturing process can also foster the values of togetherness and harmony. With its rich taste and symbolic meaning, Nasi Tumpeng is not only a dish, but also a reflection of Indonesia’s rich culture that is worth preserving.

In the Advanced Level KNB Program Listening class, lecturer Ilfat integrated cultural material on the topic of Nasi Tumpeng interactively by inviting students to compete in arranging Nasi Tumpeng Mini. That way, apart from learning language skills, students also get to know Nasi Tumpeng, and directly go through the process of making and arranging it. Through this method, students can feel the excitement and sense of togetherness that is felt in making Nasi Tumpeng.

Language and Culture Course: Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University

As a continuation of INCULS in globalizing the Indonesian language through BIPA teaching, on Friday, March 1 2024 INCULS held an Indonesian culture class for seven foreign students studying at INCULS. One of the Indonesian cultures they studied was karawitan so they gained new experience and knowledge. Karawitan culture is a traditional art that is famous in Java and is played by beating (hitting) the gamelan with the slendro and pelog scales. The word karawitan comes from Javanese, namely the word ‘rawit’ which means smooth and soft.

Apart from learning culture, they of course also learn Indonesian in class with native Indonesian lecturers and outside the classroom with UGM student tutors. During the language learning process, they acquire six Indonesian language skills, namely listening, speaking, writing, reading, vocabulary, and grammar skills. Apart from that, they also had the opportunity to talk directly with Indonesian people, such as when shopping in Malioboro.

The seven foreign students who are studying Indonesian language and culture at INCULS are students from Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU), Japan. They took part in an intensive program at INCULS for three weeks, February 19 – March 8 2024. Thank you for trusting INCULS UGM to learn Indonesian language and culture. See you next time!
